Review: Babeland’s Satin Bondage Kit

When I learned Babeland was sending a Satin Bondage Kit my way for review, I was intrigued. The term “bondage” means different things to different people. For some, it means casually tying someones wrists to the headboard, while for others it conjures images of lockable wrist and ankle cuffs lashed to the bed frame with leather straps. I was curious to see where this set fell on that spectrum and I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint.

The package arrived in a discreet plain brown box with a vague return address that didn’t allude to its contents. Inside was a pretty black satin drawstring bag that held two five-foot lengths of satin about three inches wide, and a black satin tie-on eye mask. The presentation is quite nice and would look wonderful nestled among tissue in a gift box. Looks aren’t everything, of course, so I was anxious to see how the rather delicate fabric would stand up to use.

The sashes are plenty long enough to wrap one end around a wrist and still have enough material left over to reach the headboard or bed frame. It’s too bad the set doesn’t come with two extra ties for securing ankles, but that’s just a minor drawback. In a pinch, you could use the sashes to secure legs and the eye mask to tie hands together.

The eye mask is nice and soft, large enough to completely obscure vision, and its ties are long enough to accommodate any size head. Although the mask itself stays tied, it slips off the head very easily because the smooth satin doesn’t cling to hair very well.

Depending on how skilled the tier-upper is at creating knots, the wrist straps hold firm and won’t come undone. However, I advise some knot-tying practice sessions ahead of your evening of fun to discover which knots will stay snug without becoming too tight during playtime.

Overall, I think the kit is terrific for light bondage play or for couples who want to explore what it’s like to be tied up during sex in a light-hearted, non-threatening way. If you’ve got experience with bondage, however, this is not the set for you. Its too easy to slip out of the ties and you don’t as feel properly restrained as you do with cuffs, belts, or rope. The ties also have a maddening tendency to tighten and interfere with circulation as you pull against them.

If you’re looking for a way to bring a little spice into the bedroom, though, I highly recommend the Satin Bondage Kit. Thanks to the soft material and elegant presentation, it’s a non-intimidating way to gently secure — and explore! — your partner without feeling like you’re making a back-alley porn movie.
